The Completely Different Paths To Federal Student Loans Forgiveness

By Evan Pierre

Student loan forgiveness and service pay back programs offer monetary incentives in exchange for certain work commitment. The student loan forgiveness programs assist students to pay back a percentage of an employee's student loan after service commences. Similarly service pay back programs cover a part of the student's school expenses in return for an agreement to work in a particular job for a specific time period later on.

The objectives of these programs are to supply monetary assistance to students to assist them with the cost of school, to entice people to work for a time period in a particular job or under served area, or to entice people to stay in a high need profession, region or under served center. More than forty bills were introduced in the 108th Congress and in the 109th Congress many more bills have been introduced which will expand loan forgiveness or service pay back programs or extend them to additional occupational groups.

As the name suggests the loan that can be directly obtained from the Federal Government is called direct loans, on the other hand loans provided by banks, credit unions and other lenders participating in the FFEL program is called FFEL loans. Likewise for parents who are willing to fund their child's education is the Parent Plus loans. For deserving students who are unable to afford the interest payments on Stafford loans, Federal Perkins loans are offered in addition to other loans. Low rate of interest are carried by these loans.

In order to gain eligibility for the student forgiveness program you must be ready for a lengthy period of volunteer work in only three volunteer groups which include Peace Corps, AmeriCorps and volunteers in Service to America (VISTA). If you are in the military which includes the National Guard, will also make you eligible for federal student loan forgiveness programs. Being a teacher in certain low-income areas will provide you an eligibility for the programs.

The child Care Provider Loan Forgiveness program offers 100% cancellation to a highly trained child care provider on the loans administered under the FFEL and the Direct Loan Program. Up to 15% of Perkins loans may be cancelled by joining the military, volunteering for AmeriCorps, VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) or Peace Corps and an ex-student may be eligible for a deferment on Stafford loans. Disability, death, bankruptcy and closing down of an education institution will result in 100% cancellation of a student loan.
