Meeting Pell Grant Requirements For A Quality Education

By Gale Bedden

Many people have the desire to go to college. For some, they will be the first in their family to attend an university. Many are facing problems when it comes to coming up with the finances to attend the school of their choice. However, all is not lost. There are different loans and grants that exist that can aid an individual when it comes to getting an education. Meeting Pell Grant requirements may be the first step in obtaining financial help.

Requirements for Pell Grants usually fall into two area. The first one deals with being able to show that they are in need of financial assistance. This largely depends on an individual's expected family contribution.

The EFC comes from information entered in the free application for financial student aid. It is based upon the total income of a person's household. If an individual's EFC falls below a certain dollar amount, then they qualify for assistance.

Secondly, the next category consists of certain criteria and a number of questions that determine eligibility. This section is also separated into two categories. One part consists of necessities for a Pell Grant, and the later one focuses on what's needed to qualify for financial aid.

Two specific requirements that an individual needs to meet is that this will be the first time that they will be pursuing a degree. However, those that need to attend post secondary school in order to be licensed in a certain area will also be considered. The second factor is that those that are currently incarcerated in a federal or state institution will not be considered.

Once an individual has met this criteria, they will move on to the requirements for federal aid. These areas must be fulfilled before applying for a grant of any sort, as well as financial aid.

Some of these specifications include being a United States citizen, having a social security number, and even being able to show that pursuing a degree would be beneficial. They also request males to be registered with the Secret Service at a certain age, as well as being enrolled in one of the participating institutions. Those who have been convicted for selling drugs while receiving financial aid will not be eligible for federal aid. Also, individuals will have to sign a document verifying that they will use their proceeds towards educational expenses and are not in default of any federal loan.,

Financial aid assistance is determined by the individual's EFC, the cost of tuition, and their enrollment status. Answers to questions pertaining to assistance can be obtained through the financial aid office of their school of choice. Individuals may be able to get help that would expedite the process. However, applicants should apply by January 1st, and by June 30th since aid is given on a first-in-line basis.

Fulfilling the specifications along with certain Pell Grant requirements will help an individual obtain the financial assistance that they deserve. Everyone deserves a right to an education, especially if help is made available.
