Transitioning Of The Lollipop: The Last Fifty Years

By Casey Z. Sato

Modern lollipops can be purchased in a variety of styles and innovations. Companies are always looking for the next big hit no matter how crazy the idea may be, like safer suckers with looped sticks to help prevent choking and some large enough to break your jaws. Medieval ages are the first estimated documentation of sweets that were composed of cooked sugar and placed on a stick to harden; the overall composure of lollipops have evolved more in the last half century than in the last few hundred years. Swirled pops seen frequently in barber shops and thrift stores in the fifties have taken on a more contemporary twist in the last couple decades, heading towards never before seen shapes and ideas.

A distorted candy cane is the mystery behind the swirl pops shape; once the cane is in circular form, it is left to harden, forming the lollipop. Bubble gum, chocolate, and liquid fillings are still the most popular interiors for lollipops currently; inventive tactics are nipping at the heels though, with light up centers and toys inside the candy. Diners and markets sell the most ice cream pops- although society tends to forget these confectionary treats are lollipops, the stick determines the difference. The most popular ice cream on a stick is the time-honored vanilla ice cream covered in a hard chocolate shell. As with most things modern, handiness comes at the touch of a button- some lollipops are fitted now with electrical devices that spin the sucker for you.

Not all suckers are intended for children, as some contain alcohol, worms, and other insects. Medicinal suckers are manufactured for adults, not for children who would assume these to be candies, and used by military soldiers for fast, effective doses. Although not accepted by the FDA, some have claimed to be diet aids. While most suckers are child friendly, a select few remain for mature buyers for fun and pranks. Businesses market these as personalized lollipops where the consumer chiefly designs the shape, flavor, and color of the sucker. Several designs range from hilarious adult content to child pleasant, such as teddy bears or a favorite cartoon character.

Corn syrup and flavored fructose would be a couple of the ingredients implicated in the candy making process. Different molds make diverse candies and before the lollipop mixture journeys to this point, it must first be flavored and colored. When broken down, the word lollipop interprets into 'tongue slap', which is the only real hard facts about this treat; their origins during medieval times are only a presumption.

Lollipops today are a very wide variety and cornered market, with suckers sold nearly in every store that sells candy bars. Little has changed in the last few centuries as far as boiling sugar and syrup is concerned, which are the two main ingredients in lollipops. Three key variables of the lollipop business are palate, motif, and accessibility. Lollipops are often found by registers in the front of businesses simply because they are a great item to buy just because you see it, the sucker looks delicious, and you must have it immediately. Sometimes, a lollipop is a must have quick fix- whether you're in need of a boost of energy or a treat for an irritated child, you are ensured to enjoy these indulgences fully, with their wonderful taste and quick boosts of vigor.
