The Correct DC Business License Will Open Doors For You

By Alexandra Anderson

Operating a company is never straightforward and there are many things that must happen before opening is possible. One of the most important of these behind-the-scenes requirements is obtaining the proper dc business license. Without one, a person is not only operating a firm outside the law, but they are also losing out on some great benefits that they provide.

Licenses are usually obtained by local government offices, often those who regulate all businesses in the area. One of these gives the holder the permission to operate their company with all the correct authorizations needed. There are multiple types of licenses and there are times when one firm may need more than just one type of permit, usually relating to the types of services or products that they sell.

In many locations, registering a company is required before being able to get a license for an enterprise. There are some areas, however, where getting such a permit also includes registration, it really just depends on the specific locale. To better understand the process, potential owners and operators must look into the specific requirements and rules in the area in which they intend to open their company.

In the United States, each state has its own set of laws and regulations. These can be easily found on most government and state websites, in local government offices, and through writing to the governing boards who oversee local businesses. Even credible and highly professional businesses can be sanctioned, fined, and shut down if they are not operating with the proper licenses.

For those wishing to get a permit of this sort in Washington D. C., there are some procedures that must be followed. Most owners must get the Basic Licenses before opening up their respective operations. These licenses are administered by the DCRA, or the Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs, which is a government body that oversees inspections and licensing.

Many businesses in Washington D. C. Will have to obtain additional licensing beyond the Basic documentation. These are often businesses with specialized services or products, such as alcohol, events, food services, sports, etc. Additional licensing is required in these things because the safety of the public is often involved.

Fees and costs for a permit of the sort vary from place to place and also from one type to another. Large businesses with many employees, such as movie theaters, pay upwards of $1,000 in D. C. Smaller businesses, such as pet stores, will pay closer to $100 for their papers. A permit is required for any company which manufactures or sells tangible goods, or for those who offer a service to the public at a charge.

There are many benefits to getting a dc business license. One of the biggest is name protection, as most areas will not allow for more than one company per individual name. Other benefits include sales tax savings, wholesale access, and access to trade shows and conventions. Licenses are not only required by law, but also benefit the owner in so many ways.
