Remove the old cord from the weights and take some time cleaning out the wells and inner frame of the wood. This can help with the opening and closing, keeping it running smoothly. Once you have done this cut a block of wood to sit at the bottom of the well at a height of around three or four inches.
Pull out the old rope and remove the weights from the bottom. Give the area a good clean out so the metal weights are able to run smoothly. Often this space is inhabited by animals and it can cause problems with sticking if it is not cleared out from time to time. Once it is clean cut a piece of wood to about four inches high, and then position it in place at the bottom of the space.
On top off the block place the weights after giving them a dry clean to remove any dust or grime. And then you can replace the rope or cord and begin threading it through the pulley hole at the top of the window, until it reaches the weight at the bottom.
Once you have done this it is then time to tie the cord onto the weights. Make sure that the amount of rope left sticking out from the pulley hole is around four inches. You are then able to tie a knot and then attach it to the corresponding groove at the side of the window sash.
You then need to repeat the process on the other side and then replace the casing securing all the trim with nails. To complete the look you can spend time filling in all of the nails and sanding it flush. All you need then is a coat of paint and your windows will be fully operational and looking fantastic.
