5 Important Things To Know Before You Start A Home Business Online

By Beth Swanson

As long as you have a computer and access to high speed internet, your opportunities to make money are endless. Of course, not opportunities are alike, and there are some things you should consider. The following five rank among the most important:

Are you good at sales?

Sales skills are not everyone's wealth, and even if some find it easy to sell anything, for others selling is an impossible feat. For the home based worker who has the ability to sell, network marketing may be the perfect home based business. Network marketing typically involves selling products in one or more niche markets, as well as selling the opportunity. Network marketing is also known as multi-level marketing, and you can earn commission money both from products you sell and products others you have recruited are selling. Each opportunity has its own commission plan, and many pay bonuses on top of commissions.

Do you have any kind of experience?

If you have done this before, you are already aware of what you can do and what you can't do. But if you have never done this before, you might need a bit of training. Some companies are great for offering training and tools you can use to increase your volume of sales. The training you receive can be delivered through webinars, weekly conference calls, written information or personal coaching.

Can you hold your own on the internet?

If you know how to use the internet proficiently, and you know how to create a basic website, you are on your way. As an example, if you have a website, you can generate an income through Google ads.

If you haven't the foggiest idea of how to set up and host a website, be sure to find a company you can partner with who will do the heavy lifting. There are many Internet-based opportunities for the home based worker from companies that provide what are called "replicated sites." They typically create the web page for you, and you only need to work your marketing skills to attract traffic to the page.

How many hours do you plan to work?

You must always be clear on the amount of hours you can work before you pick out any type of home business. A homemaker or a stay-at-home mom might only need to work a couple of hours a day. But, if you want to earn a living from home, a mom's side income won't be sufficient. Sometimes a single home based business will provide all of the revenue a person needs, while other times you have to embark on several opportunities to diversify and multiply your revenue streams.

How Hands-On do You Want to Be?

Some online businesses require a great deal of involvement in taking orders, customer service, and marketing. Other opportunities require a great deal of initial involvement, but then manage themselves. If you enjoy being in the thick of things, try to find an opportunity that allows you contact with others. If instead you don't like to deal with customers, you can always select a business that will run without your regular input.
