Business : How To Reduce Your Carbon Footprint

By Steve Kelly

Some of the advantages that your business will experience upon reducing its carbon footprint include cutting costs on general operations, and staying within the legal guidelines of the CRC rules and regulations, by not emitting more than 6,000 MWH per year. Additional benefits include increasing the amount of profit that your business is enjoying by reducing unnecessary costs on energy expenditures, and thus gaining a profitable reputation as a green business. This is sure to earn the respect of both prospective clients and business partners, and thus help ease your path to future sustainability.

Possibly, the most prominent form of energy usage that characterizes a business, whether it is a small one or large one, is that of numerous and expensive office computers. A few energy saving tips which will help reduce the energy expenditures, of the often abused office computers, include getting into the habit of turning off the computers on a daily basis, at the end of the day. In addition, using a single power strip, or plug, to connect multiple computers on, and making sure that it is being shut down at the end of every day will help you save copious amounts of energy overnight.

Also, tackling the amount of energy that is spent on lighting, in your office, is also an intelligent form of reducing your carbon footprint. Using compact incandescent bulbs, which actually last longer, and use less energy, than your typical 60 to 100 watt light bulbs, is another great way of saving on unnecessary energy expenditures.

Also, paying attention to the amount of energy that your air conditioning, and heating and ventilation systems, are actually spending, so that you may find more effective ways to save on your energy usage, is another great way to begin reducing your businesses' carbon footprint.

Lastly, being able to control the amount of paper that is being wasted as a result of unmanageable printing habits, by refraining from printing unnecessary documents or emails, and making better use of double sided copying and printing, and other available means of electronic preservation, are all very effective methods of reducing paper wastage. Also, upping the usage of electronic communication, through the implementation and use of digitally signing documents, and other such electronic forms of communication, is also another great way of reducing the paper output in your office, and thus helps to contain your businesses' carbon footprint onto a manageable scale.
