The simplest way to add automated date into a Header and Footer

By Lois Park

Headers and Footers include information you want to be on each page. When you have wrote what you would like to be in your header or Footer Microsoft Word will instantly copy this to any other pages made. However if you want basic things in your header or footer you can create them automatically in Word.

To try this you're going to need to open your Header and Footer by selecting Insert from the top menu then clicking Headers and Footers you are then given a choice of which type you want. Once your cursor is in the Header or Footer you could have an extra tab appear at the top part of the screen which says Design with Header and Footer tools written above in green.

Decide on the Design tab to the left of your screen you'll see in the tab there's a button that is titled Date and Time by clicking this you will get a pop up that shows you the varied layout your date and time can be in. Making Word put in an automatic date will make the date change every time you open the document.

Putting in an automatic page number can be particularly handy as Word changes the page number in the Header or Footer as you create more pages. To try this again push the Design tab at the very top of the page this time select page number you'll then be in a position to choose on which part of your page you need the page number to be shown.

Other typical things you can include in your header and footer when creating a template may be Abstract, Writer, Class, Comments, Company, Address, Company Email, Publish date, Subject and title. Add these by going into the Design tab then choosing Quick parts then Document Property. These will remind you to input this information when you open the document.
