Strategic Marketing for Small Business

By Pomeraine Bill

Small Business Marketing Tips

The majority of small businesses regularly try to find marketing plans they have never used before. It can be difficult to differentiate yourself amongst the competition in your area and marketing can be the biggest key to success. While traditional marketing strategies should be incorporated somewhat into your overall advertising plan, it is also important to embrace unique ideas that specifically aid small businesses. Below, you will find some helpful suggestions that you can use as you develop your plan.

1. Recognize Your Audience

Remember that trying to attract a huge demographic is not always the most effective strategy. No matter how successful a company is, they will never be able to attract every consumer. Therefore, you should identify your target audience and craft a marketing plan that will specifically attract people within that demographic. If you launch a boring marketing campaign that is meant to appeal to a wide audience your profits will probably be lower than if you had attempted to attract a highly specific demographic.

2. Cultivate Friendships

Owning a small business puts you in a unique position in your community. People often choose local businesses to avoid the impersonal feeling they can sometimes get by dealing with large corporations. As a small business owner, you need to take advantage of this fact. You must make a point of getting to know your regular patrons on a personal level. The more you know about your most loyal customers, the better your advertising campaigns will become.

3. Don't Lose Contact

One advantage that you have as a small business is the fact that your customer base is smaller than that of a massive corporate entity. This gives you the chance to constantly be in-touch with your clientele. You must keep in-touch with both new and old customers. Get your customers' emails and send them discounts on their birthdays and other times of the year. You can also use this email list to send out a monthly newsletter detailing the sales and special events your business has coming-up. This is an extremely personalized style of advertising. Your customers, therefore, will feel valued.

4. Be a Presence in Your Town

One great marketing plan for small businesses is to merely have a presence in their towns. You can achieve this by using numerous techniques. For instance, you can host charity auctions or other events. Another great option is to start sponsoring the high school sports teams in your town. You will become highly visible in the community by trying either of these.
