What is Local SEO?

By Jessica Stevenson

As a business owner, you should try and expand your business as much as possible. The Internet is a massive tool that spans across the world but your business may be a tiny smidge within that tool.

Local Search Engine Optimization has one main focus. It is primarily to bring local businesses to the front page of certain search engines, such as Google Local or Yahoo! Local. This allows more consumers to see your business, read reviews, and make a decision as to whether or not they will choose you or your competitors. Local SEO is a fantastic marketing opportunity for any business owner.

Local SEO techniques focus on getting your name, business, and other information to show up in the most relevant local searches. An easier way to look at Local SEO is to think of it as the locals section in a yellow pages book. For example, if you own a deli in Albany, New York, people will be able to find more information on your deli when they search locally through a search engine.

Make sure your address is clearly prominent on your website. Also, use local keywords on your website so they get picked up by search engines. Let's go back to that deli example! Users searching with the keyword "deli's" will get results from across the nation. However, "Albany deli" or "Deli in Albany" are likely local keywords to be used by the user. You want to use local keywords that will work in your advantage.

Both consumers and business owners can benefit from using Local SEO. Business owners are able to advertise their business to customers in the area. Local SEO allows the business owner to branch out to the community and improve online visibility. On the flip side, consumers are able to search locally for businesses that fit their needs. Everybody wins!
