All About Climate Controlled Storage

By Jeffry Bass

While many people assume that keeping an even temperature is a sure fire way to protect their belongings, there are different degrees of risk. This includes risks that pertain to the length of storage time and the fluctuating weather conditions of the site where the objects need to be stored. Keep these facts in mind when deciding to look into climate-control features for your personal storage locker so you know if this is a frivolous or necessary expense.

Climate control is a feature that would prevent damage for different materials like textiles and electronics. Hot and cold temperatures along with poor ventilation are ideal for mold growth which would cause staining and warping of anything in storage. Temperate places are typically the best site for storage and offer the lowest possibility for damage due to atmospheric conditions.

Cold and long winters or humid summers are expected to affect the condition of your items. But if you only need to store something for a short amount of time then climate control is not something you should pay additional fees for. Upgrading from basic to climate-controlled units will definitely cost you more.

But not all companies who have climate-control options offer the same quality of service. If the company only offers temperature regulation, then you should think twice about storing fabric and painted canvas. For these specific items you will have to find units that manage moisture and humidity.

Some things can survive well under the conditions of basic storage but some things simply cannot. To be sure if you need to get climate-control, you can consider a number of things. Objects like mattresses and sheets are prone to mold and mildew so they really need to be stored in carefully regulated environments.

Metal equipment and appliances don't require stringently controlled conditions unless in very humid places to prevent rust from developing. Otherwise, they can do well in a basic storage locker. If you are storing appliances make sure that they are spotless before locking them in and if you plan on storing a refrigerator, provide enough room to keep its door open.

Paper heavy objects like documents, certificates, books and the like need to be stored in climate controlled lockers. It will prevent the process of water and mildew damage. If you need to store gardening tools and backyard equipment then climate control isn't something you should worry about.

Unless you are storing linen and textile items for a brief period of time, you should choose climate controlled units. Make sure that the clothes or textiles have been cleaned before being stored and they should be placed in hangers. Take note of humidity and ventilation when you need to store fabrics and clothes for a long time.

Furniture will also benefit from climate control since they are usually a mix of textiles, wood and metal which could degrade from being exposed to high humidity. Glassware and various types of tableware are sturdier and can handle being stored in any type of facility without risking damage. Electronics on the other hand, are easily damaged by moisture so they definitely require climate control.

Generally, places that experience a lot of humidity all year round have climate control as a default setting for most cheap storage units. If you plan to store in a place that experiences extreme cold or heat along with a humid atmosphere then climate control is even more imperative. Humidity doubles the damaging effects of hot and cold temperatures on various objects.
