Should One Consider Health Insurance

By Carole Ashley

If you think you do not need Health Insurance, think again. Remember that life is full of surprises and few of them are pleasant, thus the need for health insurance. Sometimes Lady Luck just likes throwing that curveball, to put it loosely. The presence of risk requires that some form of risk management be present. Be that as it may, insurance and risk management are closely affiliated with each other.

So, what is health insurance? To put it in simple terms, a health insurance policy is an agreement between an individual and an insurance company. Such policies include a plenitude of different benefits, such as access to medication, medical exams and other sundry treatments. Covered services, on the other hand, can be referred to as "boutique" services that are implicitly covered in insurance policies that may be issued by a business or a place of employment.

So, when a particular service is not covered by the insurance company and you have it performed anyway, the insurance company "denies the claim." In such a situation, the individual will be left with no other choice, but to pay for the service out of his own pocket. However, you have some form of protection somehow, as you can always question the denial of claim as per the terms and conditions of your insurance plan manual or guidebook. One should always consult a health care professional before taking such action.

Everybody planning to take out an insurance policy would have to read the fine print - the terms and conditions - before signing their name on the dotted line. This is to ensure that your hard-earned money is not invested in a policy that does not meet your needs. You should also give pause to this very important fact about insurance - it would be the provider's discretion and not the doctor's as to what medical emergencies or situations would be covered and not covered. So before making your final decision, should you feel unsure about a policy you have considered, contact the insurance policy for clarity and confirmation.

In conclusion, when considering the purchase of health insurance it is important to consider all of its merits. Remember that the cost of hospitalization can often outweigh the cost of an insurance policy, so this small investment can be very well worth your while in the grand scheme of things. And in addition to that, insurance policies are in most cases tax deductible, so instead of paying the tax man, one would be paying for his or her financial reprotection in case of a medical emergency or hospitalization. These are some of the financial incentives of having an insurance policy. There is also another benefit to somebody possessing a health insurance policy, which goes beyond the obvious benefit of protecting oneself and his/her family, and that would be the benefit of peace of mind, which every policy holder should truly value and prioritize analogous to one's physical health. All things considered, owning a health insurance policy is a good investment and one that you probably would want to make sooner rather than later.
