Deciding whether to build your own Small Business Website

By Owen Derby

Having someone build a small business website for you needn't be costly, it will still hit your bottom-line figure but the idea is that your new website will generate more sales and pay for itself. You may be thinking about having a go at creating your own website. Take a look at the following considerations. first of all, do you have the time needed to dedicate to putting a website together? and secondly, what do you want your website to achieve for you?

Learning to design and build a basic business website isn't the most difficult task. That is not to say that web design is not a vastly in depth subject requiring training and talent, but with a little study and application you can gain adequate results at a basic level.

To be good at creating your own website you should be the kind of person who can pick things up fairly quickly and also be adept at understanding new systems, these are often skills found in people that own and run their own business. You should acquire a few essential skills before you commence, including CSS, HTML and basic web design and layout.

So, we return to our first question. Do you really have enough time to realize and implement these skills?

You may feel that you would be happy to put the hours in to learn the basics because you are feeling fed up with working for others and want to start up on your own. Get yourself online and check out some tutorial sites. Find and purchase an up to date 'Build Your Own Website' book through Amazon. There is plenty available, most of which will point you in the right direction.

Perhaps however your circumstances are different. You may currently own or run a business and find it difficult to find the time to carry out your usual workload. Building your own business website in this situation is not likely to do you, your business or your personal life any favours and if you aren't focused on what you are trying to accomplish then the results aren't likely to do your business justice.

Now we explore our second question. What do you hope your new website will gain you? Whilst mulling this one over it would be helpful to take a look at other websites for your direct competitors.

If you are a small business such as a plumber, a landscape gardener, an electrician, or anybody who wishes to set up a web presence so that people in your local area searching online for your type of services can find your contact details and call you then a very small site that appears in the search engine results may be sufficient for you. A basic website to fulfil this need is absolutely achievable.

The type of business you are in however may need something more professional. If this is the case then a basic looking site might not give an impression of your business that you want potential clients to see. Enter some search terms significant to your business into Google. What is the level of competition in your field? Investigate. You may decide that your competitors sites are of a significant standard and the best course of action for your business is to hire a professional to design and build your site.

So, to summarise; If you have the time to learn to build your website and you believe that you can achieve a high enough standard then go for it, if you are not sure then hire a professional. Remember, creating your website is just the beginning, you will have wasted your time if nobody can find it on Google. You need your website to be at the top of the search ranking in order for it to be a success.

Don't miss out on vital customers and revenue due to your lack of presence on the web. Whilst it may not be impossible to create your own business website, you need to carefully weigh up whether or not you have the time to learn the new skills necessary and if you are likely to produce a site of adequate quality to meet your needs.
