Eliminating Debt The Right Way

By Bernard Bowers

Are you getting precious little sleep due to debt problems? Are you having trouble eating (or overeating) as well? Are you trying to get the monkey off your back temporarily by making measly minimum payments on your credit card? You may have answered yes to any of the above questions, and if you do, you, my friend, need to step up to the plate and hit that home run out of debt!

Pop quiz - can you tell us who's the most qualified person that can get you out of the financial rut you are presently in? Don't pay a consumer credit or debt counselor to get you out of debt.

They can do the same things that you can do on your own, except for one thing - a sizable fee for their overrated services. Even worse, they may not have your best interests in mind, because they do their business for the credit card companies, or are owned by the credit card companies themselves.

But what if things don't go right, do you think these companies will still have your back as they claim they would? Evaluate where you stand with your debt. If your expenses are much greater than your income, then you have two dire, but necessary choices to make.

Don't spend for things you don't need if you can't persuade your boss to increase your salary. You can also work part time. For instance, pizza delivery drivers can earn about $300 to $500 weekly - bet you didn't know that! You can minimize your debt with a nice part time-job like that.

Don't call Ghostbusters if your debts are a spectre hovering over your day-to-day life - call your creditors, because they might just be of help. Tell them what you can afford to pay. They might not consider your request, but in that case, just send the amount anyway.

With the exception of returned checks, do you really think creditors bounce payments back? You don't need to be as smart as Einstein or Stephen Hawking to get out of debt. Just make your payments steadily, just like that plucky little turtle who upset the hare in the race.

Debt can wreak havoc on your marriage, it can ruin your future financial health, and it can even affect your body because of the stress factors it puts on you. The solution is not to ignore your debts - simple as that.

You have to face the music and finish up those debts like eating that huge burger you thought you couldn't - in bite-size pieces. Work together with the lenders and hammer out a compromise and you can settle your debts without stress, no matter how insurmountable they may seem.
