Everyone seems to rely on Google Maps these days. You may be looking for a plumber or a local flower shop. You may need directions to a new location. Whatever it is you are searching for, it is bound to pop up on Google. However, Google has some competition coming their way. The question is, will they be able to adapt quickly and one-up the competition? This remains to be seen.
With the release of Apple's iOS6 later this year, they announced that they will have their own 'Maps' section on the iPhone. It will no longer be 'Google Maps'. Apple boasts that the new feature will have real-time traffic information, 3-D views, turn-by-turn navigation, and Siri to assist in directions.
Siri is considered a great asset because Apple has made some improvements to make the voice-control assistant more accurate and helpful. The new application will supposedly include more than 100 million business listings worldwide when it launches. Google currently has around 80 million listings in their directory.
Reviews are extremely important for the consumer. They allow the customer to make an informed decision about a business and their services, based on previous customer experiences. Apple also announced that Yelp reviews will be integrated into the business listings. Yelp reviews tend to be detailed accounts of previous customer experiences. It seems that Apple is winning the battle of the apps!
Apple and Google are constantly competing with one another to come out with a better product. After Apple's announcement, Google noted that the creation of 3-D maps would soon be available to Android users. However, they did not state when they would be available to the public. One negative side to the Apple Maps app is that there are no public transit directions for the user. This is a huge issue cause many iPhone owners live in large cities, with public transport. Google has this feature, as well as walking directions with an estimated time of arrival. Only time will tell which maps application will be more beneficial to users, but we just have to wait until iOS6 releases!
