29Prime: Protecting Your Brand Online

By Jessica Stevenson

Business owners: listen up! You should always be monitoring your online reputation. Your brand and your name is extremely important. Customers can look up your business through any search engine. They will be reading both good and bad postings about your business. You must do everything you can to protect your name. This usually means that you have to clean up your social media websites.

Many people often believe that their social media account is extremely 'private'. Let me break the cold hard truth to you: nothing on the internet is private. People can snoop around and find whatever they want. There are plenty of ways to protect your name and reputation online, however, nothing is truly private. Keep this in mind, especially if you are a business owner, trying to promote your business.

Facebook is the largest social media website on the Internet with around 800 million users. Because of the huge numbers, it is a fantastic marketing opportunity for any business owner. It allows you to promote your business, basically for free, to millions of eyes.

You may want to consider not posting certain things on Facebook, such as political and religious beliefs. This should be avoided unless you are trying to reach out to a specific demographic. Unfortunately, people tend to turn away from a business if they are associated with a certain religion or political party. This is not right, but that is how people work. They are judgmental and harsh. You must decide whether or not you want to share your political and religious beliefs with the entire world of Facebook.

Your personal life is something that should be consistently monitored on social media websites. Facebook is not a journal and should not be treating as one. Refrain from posting negative comments about employees or past customers that you have done business with. You may believe that your Facebook account is completely private, however, there is always a way for someone to expose your rants to the public. Business owners should always remain classy and professional on any social networking site that they use. If you want your business to be portrayed in the best possible light, make sure you are always appropriate on all of your social media websites.
