A Guide to Air Duct Cleaning

By Xander Davenport

A home has many nooks and crannies to be cleaned. One of the most disregarded jobs by many owners is the cleaning of air ducts because they're out of sight in the building's roofing. It is overlooked so frequently that homeowners even forget the last time they got their air ducts cleaned.

This is unfortunate because air duct cleaning can scale back your electricity bill and extend the life of the air system. It can also have considerable health benefits for those who live permanently in the house.

Recent changes in building structure like sealed doors, high-efficiency windows and increased insulation have reduced the amount of air moving from outside to in the building. As air pollutants enter the building, they remain inside. This reduction of air movement has caused the air quality to lower. Cleaning the air ducts is the best way to remove all those pollutants in the air like fungi, microbes and molds. Duct cleaning is actually an important process to keep the quality of indoor air high.

One method of cleaning the air duct is by connecting a suction into the duct channel. A hose with high pressure cleans and removes the particles from the interior. After cleaning, disinfectant may be applied to completely eliminate the remaining dust mites, bacteria and molds. This is a good way of cleaning the air duct when administered by qualified and trained professionals.

There are certain things you should make sure of when you have your air duct cleaned. First, everything in the system should be cleaned, do not forget a rarely used room or you will have wasted your cash. Second, air duct cleaning can take a couple of hours, so be ready to have workmen in your residence for as much as half a day. Nevertheless this would all depend on the dimensions of the building or the locale of the heating and cooling system.
