Jobs With A Medical Billing Degree

By Shari Swanson

One very popular degree being sought out is offered through many of the medical billing Houston colleges. There are many types of positions available to someone with this degree. Below are a couple of the types of jobs that can be had and where they are located.

A biller is someone that works in the field at locations like dentist offices, chiropractors, private practices, hospitals and clinics. Information about the patient and their visit is entered into a computerized system so that they will receive a bill for the supply or services they got at the visit.

A coding department employee or a coder does the same thing. The only difference is that knowledge of CPT, HCPCS and ICD-9 codes are required, as they are entered into a system that creates a bill. This is commonly done for insurance companies and Medicaid as well as those places listed above.

Both positions garner the same wage and require the same type of knowledge. It can be confusing due to how employers word their ads for a job. Reading through the description to find out about the education or experience required will help to avoid sending a resume for a position a person isn't qualified for.

Many employers offer a training program for entry level positions, while some ask for a certification to be completed. The certification exam can be expensive depending on what company is used and is not required by the state. Some places that offer the training will pay for an employee to become certified, but only while they work at that facility.

For people that are going into the medical billing houston job field, make sure to look at the credits and degree you may have to be sure it is accredited. There are no educational requirements to take the certification test, but many employers won't recognize a degree if it comes from an institution that isn't accredited. For details on this, talk to the human resources department of the employer you wish to apply with.
