Prioritize Your Financial Responsibilities

By Brad Wilson

The inability to prioritize your finances is the cause for failure of home budgets for most individuals. Prioritizing is crucial when you are trying to develop a practical budget.

If you use online personal finance software determining these priorities becomes much easier. This article will show you how you can successfully determine your financial priorities and evaluate your expenses.

How Many Types of Expenses Are There?

When using personal finance software to prioritize your finances, you must first determine what your expenses are. Here are the various types of expenses that you will come across.

Unexpected Expenses- Every type of bill including medical, home repair, or even car maintenance are termed as unexpected expenses. Unless you are prepared for them, these can ruin your entire budget because they tend to come in unexpectedly.

Annual and Semi-Annual Costs- One year payments or payments that need to be given two to three times a year should be added to a budget forecasting. This type of expense can include anything from insurance to taxes and license renewals.

Monthly Costs - Monthly payments usually become something of a habit since they are encountered so often. Monthly payments can include cost of internet and phone and credit card payments.

Weekly Expenses- One of the most essential part of the budget are the weekly expenses that include food costs and transportation.

Optional Expenses - Discretionary expenses are those items or services you typically buy each day or every week that you could really live without. But instead of thinking that you will be living without these, it is better to just plan for them so they don't end up taking more money than necessary.

Your Essential Financial Responsibilities

It is tough to determine which of your financial responsibilities should have priority over the rest. The following tips will help guide you.

Priorities that lie on the top are those of shelter and food. Whether its home owner's association fees or rent payment, or buying groceries, you need to think of that first.

After that you need utilities, like electricity, heat, and water to remain in the home. For a healthy life these are important.

If you use a vehicle to get to work, making your car payment and car insurance payment each month should be next on your list of priorities. Remember- if you can't get to work, you don't earn a paycheque, and this discussion is moot.

After that come the other insurance costs from medical to home and life. Child care payments which protect your child should be in this category as well.

Any credit card payments or discretionary expenses should be last on the list. These should be provided for, but other expenses take priority.

You should use personal finance software to create a budget. This ensures that the budget really works for you.
