A Look At Military Antenna

By Virginia French

Military antenna, just like other antennae is used to transmit and receive radio waves. In transmission, the device sends out an electromagnetic wave. This wave has a particular frequency determined by the radio transmitter. During reception the device, also called the aerial, converts electromagnetic waves into a small electric current that is amplified by the receiver before being converted into sound or picture.

The device is used in the armed force for various purposes. Among the chief uses of this device is communication. The armed force establishment is a core part of any government. The establishment has to stay in constant communication for it to function effectively. The aerials help members f the armed forces communicate as they carry on with their defensive duties.

When at war, soldiers need to communicate with each other and with the base station. This applies while in training too. When a soldier is isolated in enemy territory, he needs a way to ensure that the quality of communication he receives does not let him or the mission down. A soldier therefore needs to carry a small hand-held antenna so that he can communicate with his equals juniors and seniors when the need arises.

It is also used in the when patrolling borders. The most common of these are the ones mounted on military vehicles. While a regular car will have one or two on it, armed forces cars have several antennae on them. These tend to be taller and thicker than civilian ones.

The device is used in the military is expected to cover a wide area. This is because there are areas in which transmission of radio signals is very hard. Such areas make the need for specific type of equipment. The armed forces ones are expected to receive and transmit even under the harshest of conditions as the importance of that communication is invaluable.

The ones placed on cars is also fitted to weapon detection systems. This means that the cars antenna can for example be used to specifically analyze a gunshot and determine the exact position of the shooter. This is especially important when fighting in areas where civilians are mixed with enemy forces. When a sniper is taking shots sensitive antenna with microphones fitted is used to determine his exact position. This minimizes civilian casualties.

Equipment mounted on ships is heavy duty. Such equipment is expected to broadcast signals to a wide area. Antenna on ships is linked to military satellites for communication with commanders in the home country. Ship antennae are expected to give direction when combat is at sea. It is also used in launching missiles and directing fighter planes.

Most countries have specific frequencies along which they broadcast within their forces. It is therefore important that the equipment they use is unique. As a result many types of armed-force antenna are specific to armed forces of a particular country. There are companies that specialize in making military communication equipment.
