What Qualities Comprise A Charismatic Leader?

By Sheldom Caoman

Leadership involves many abilities, talents, and attributes. Various leaders all have different traits and a common thread among all great leaders would be their inherent charisma. Without a considerable amount of natural charisma, it would be quite difficult to lead effectively. It's not really easy to miss the traits of a charismatic leader. If your goal is to be a great leader, it pays to have the ability to recognize the traits of a charismatic leader. It's because you can begin developing these attributes in yourself.

The first manifestation of a charismatic leader is appearance. Does the individual appear to be a leader? If not then he or she isn't an individual who anyone will want to follow. Well-dressed, well-groomed, and looking healthy all round -- this is how a charismatic leader should look to other individuals. Note, however, that this doesn't imply you should put on the priciest clothes you can purchase every single day or that you have to be so fit. You simply need to look respectable and in such a way that promotes a presence of leadership qualities.

Being a great speaker is one more characteristic of all charismatic leaders. Realize that charisma is all about drawing people in. If you're able to speak clearly, concisely, and articulately, you can pull people in. Proper speaking abilities are a must for a leader for one other reason: you have to be able to convey your directives in a manner they are fully understood. That enables other people to effectively follow your lead. A side point does need to be mentioned here. Giving directives isn't about making demands on people or barking orders. That simply is not a charismatic way for a leader to take.

Speaking skills go together with listening skills and if there was any characteristic that can be considered an attractive one in the eyes of others, it would be attentive listening. Lots of people are so absorbed in themselves that when they are talking with someone or to a group, they end up dominating the conversation. They neglect to give others the opportunity to voice out their thoughts. Those who do offer such opportunity to other individuals exhibit they care which, subsequently, makes others more trusting of the individual. If your people believe in you, you have people who are willing to see that your directives are followed. Unfortunately, excellent listening skills can't be faked. People can sense when a person is really listening to them and when someone is just faking it.

Charismatic leaders are usually optimistic folks. Their actions and words echo their positive perspective, and they are constantly willing to explain the benefits of their actions. Because of their positive mindset, charismatic leaders can persuade others. They can motivate their followers to realize their desired goals.

So there you go -- the characteristics of a charismatic leader. You'll observe that it is not some magic formula or some long hidden secret. Many of these characteristics are based in very basic common sense human interactions. If you model these attributes, you will find the ability to become a more charismatic leader is much more feasible.
