Develop your Dwelling - a quick guide to home improvements

By Matt Charles

So you want to improve your home? Whether it is to increase the value of the house on the market, make changes for aesthetic reasons or simply keep up with the Joneses, home improvements are more popular now than ever, thanks to a downward trend in house prices making moving increasingly costly in terms of the level of extra mortgage required to make the step up. Home improvements come in many shapes and sizes, and here are some of the basic changes that can be made.

Perhaps the most obvious thing that comes to mind is a physical change to the size of the house, as in an extension. These usually come in the form of adding an extra room, or extending the size of an existing room. Conservatories also fall into this category. If you do choose this option, you must consider the cost of making the extension as well as the potential planning permission you will need, as the council may force you to remove it if planning permission is not granted.

Houses can still be improved without physically modifying the outside, and kitchen and bathroom improvements are the next major change that can increase the value of a home. Kitchens can be expensive, however a good kitchen can vastly improve the value of a house. Bathroom improvements can make a slight difference, however en suite bathrooms being added tend to have more drastic results.

Among options considered after kitchen and bathroom upgrades are often attic conversions. Many attics are either empty or used to hoard items that are essentially no longer used. Depending on the level of space and accessibility to the attic, these can be changed to create an extra bedroom or additional living space, however these can involve an extensive amount of work.

The possibilities are endless, however the more work you have carried out, the more expensive it will be. It is worth researching each improvement very carefully before choosing to have any modifications made.
