Steps to Follow when Picking a Debt Collection Agency

By Mike Sherman

If you are a business who no longer has time to try and collect money from debtors, you are most likely trying to find a debt collection agency. You want to be certain to pick one that you can depend on and that suits your needs. There are several factors that you should take into account when making this decision. It is crucial that you choose the appropriate agency because they are going to be representing you and your reputation is under their control.

One step to take is choosing a collection agency that is licensed. If you fail to do so, you can be held responsible if the agency neglects to abide by the collection laws. You also want to be certain that the agency is licensed in every state because debtors tend to flee in order to try and avoid paying what they owe. It is also important that the agency you choose is bonded and insured so that should they ever be sued, they would have the means to survive the situation.

The next step to take is making sure the debt collection agencies are highly regarded. Go on the internet and conduct research on the agencies you are deciding between and see what you find. Go over any press releases, awards, ratings, and reviews of the agencies that you come across. You want to see that the agencies have experience and that their testimonials support that. Of course, you also want to see that they have a high success rate as well.

Another important step to take in evaluating bill collection agencies is checking for their associations and affiliations. You should look for agencies that are members of associations such as the Better Business Bureau and the Association of Credit and Collection Professionals. Membership in these associations shows that the agencies are committed to being professional and abide by all laws and regulations, such as the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. It also shows that the debt collectors are well trained and efficient at what they do. That way you will get better results from them.

Most of all, you want to see that you are getting you moneys worth from the debt collection agencies. The majority of them will just charge you a percentage of the money that they are able to collect. As a result, their employees will be focused and working hard because they don't get paid if they don't recover any debt. However, you may find it more useful to hire an agency that charges you a flat fee if you have a high amount of debtors.
