A Future Reality Show Fixated on Credit Debt Collection

By Rob Sutter

It's difficult for me to think about reality television and not have to force back the contents of my stomach. I am clearly not a fan today and while I might have indulged in guilty pleasures like the litany of shows Flavor Flav had, my tastes have changed over time. I cannot go back and watch these shows without feeling the urge to click to another website. Credit debt collection may be a more dignified subject in comparison to false romances but it still baffles me that a debt collecting reality show may just be in the works.

As reported on by the New York Daily News, the idea being passed about through various networks is one concerning a credit debt collection reality show. As silly a concept as this sounds, supposedly the show will focus on a group of collectors confronting those who are in debt. The idea may not seem terribly farfetched at first but then the idea takes a nosedive. Just the fact that these collectors will travel around in a hearse possessing a "PAYUPNOW" license plate casts the industry in a negative light and companies such as Rapid Recoverymay suffer as a result if the show is green-lit.

If the show was in the capable hands of a producer who was an authority on the debt collecting industry, I'd be more impartial on the issue. However, it is hard to make such an idea work when you consider the man behind it starred on "JUNKies." For those who aren't familiar with the show, it was focused on people dumpster diving. To say that this profession differs from debt collecting would be an understatement, almost as if a person were to compare Alfred Hitchcock's "Psycho" to "Bio-Dome" starring Pauly Shore.

What truly seems jarring about this entire idea is that these collectors are not exactly collectors. They aren't people who have made a living in the industry and, as a result, can come off as anything but genuine. This is heightened by the fact that these people will go around harassing debtors into paying, which isn't what a collector is supposed to do. This goes against the greatest rule in terms of the business and this, more than anything, paints collectors as these terrible people when it's not the case.

It baffles me that such an idea could possibly exist in the world of reality TV. This says a lot, considering the many ideas that seem to float around in this realm of entertainment. Credit debt collecting is a far more serious profession, though, and it simply cannot be done without the proper minds behind it. Sadly, only the ill-informed seem to have the final say on how the show will go and my only hope is that it never sees the light of day.
