Research Is Underway Regarding Chlorella Benefits

By Marcy Becker

Chlorella is a single-cell microalgae. It contains a high number of nutrients and is harvested for this reason. It was first discovered in the latter half of the 19th century, but chlorella benefits were not fully recognized until after World War II. Research is currently underway in the United States concerning the apparent advantages of chlorella when it is used on a regular basis.

The microalgae is a potent source of protein, the latter of which makes up 50 percent of the substance. Research also suggests that it may have a broad range of health benefits to offer humans. For hundreds of years it has been used as a dietary supplement in Japan to treat numerous diseases and symptoms, such as circulatory and joint problems, and headaches. In certain regions of the world it is used as skin ointment as well.

Each 100 gram serving of Chlorella contains 15 milligrams of vitamin C and 180 milligrams of beta-carotene, in addition to the substantial amount of protein it boasts. Both C vitamins and beta carotene are classified as antioxidants, the latter of which help the human body to scavenge for free radicals that have the ability to create malignancies in one's body. This benefit is particularly important for men and women over the age of 40, as the number of free radicals increases as people grow older.

The supplement has also been used to treat another condition referred to as fibromyalgia. It appears to be quite beneficial in treating this syndrome. Fibromyalgia causes systemic pain that significantly increases with pressure. The disorder is also associated with many other symptoms, including neuropathy, chronic fatigue, restless leg syndrome, digestive problems and allergic reactions. Although extensive research has not yet been completed regarding the use of this supplement for fibromyalgia patients, various studies suggest that one can expect positive results when using it for the aforementioned condition.

A fact that has caught the attention of scientists concerning the microalgae is its exceptionally durable cell wall. Once researchers discovered a way to penetrate this wall, the nutritional substances within the cells could be obtained and digested. Another interesting discovery was that the cell wall can attach itself to toxic heavy metals, thus preventing their absorption into one's bloodstream.

High blood pressure patients may also benefit from the supplement according to certain clinical trials. For instance, in one study, participants who were given capsules containing the microalgae for ninety days experienced decreased blood pressure. More studies are currently being conducted in this area.

The supplement can be purchased as powder or taken in capsule form. However, many nutritionists recommend using the powdered version of the product. This is because better absorption is seen with this variation of the microalgae than is noted when it is consumed in capsule form.

The supplement has yet to be evaluated by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration or a similar organization, as it is not considered a drug, but rather a food. However, many nutritionists report that the substance is safe for most individuals, with the exception of those who experience allergic reactions. Even though research indicates that numerous chlorella benefits exist, before taking any dietary supplement one should speak to a licensed health care practitioner.
