How To Take The Stand As An Accounting Expert Witness

By Lila Barry

Having an accounting expert witness for a certain case is usually a good thing. This is because the said professional is the one who will provide an objective and even concise testimony during a court trial. A few people these days want to become one. In order to be successful in this field, it is only natural to follow some tips for this.

Those professionals who are going to provide a testimony during a trial should make sure to use visual aids. This is because it makes it easier to present sophisticated accounting matters during this time. The person should utilize a graph, chart, or other illustrations to do this. It might be helpful to have written notes as well.

Watch the words that comes out from the professional's mouth. There are things that can be held against him when spoken in the court of law. It will be extremely helpful for the person to avoid answering those questions that are too ambiguous. If the question is beyond his ability to answer, make sure to say so and clarify it one more time.

Be sure to keep one's composure. There is nothing that can be gained from getting pretty worked up over some things that the other party says. When the person loses composure, it is actually easier for the other party to discredit whatever testimony made on court. It will actually put on a detrimental impact on the said case.

Be patient. There are actually those times when the schedule does not match with the original plan. There are times when interruptions happen, including delays, sidebars, recesses, motions, and other similar situations. It is for the best to keep a calm, cool demeanor to this case so that no turbulent things happen during the case.

Try to be humorous but put it in the right moment. There are still times when it is necessary for the person to break the ice. If the situation is proper, do not hesitate to crack a joke. Of course, pass it off as natural or spontaneous. Do not make a joke that is cruel to the others, especially when it seems like it is quite forced.

Even as an expert, it is fine if there are some things that one will not be able to answer. There are limits to people's knowledge and skills. Instead of bluffing an answer, it is for the best to say that the person has no knowledge about it. After all, there are professionals on the opposing team as well. The lies might get found out.

It is also for the best that the person does not become argumentative. Do not become defensive as well. This will only end up with him showing negative behavior. It is best to avoid showing such behavior in front of the crowd, especially when the opponent is starting to get the upper hand. Stay as calm and clear-headed as possible.

The ones who get the final say in the case is the judge and jury. It is essential that the accounting expert witness does not forget this fact. The answers that one has for the questions of the opposing team should also address the judge and jury.
