Is Tanzanite a Wise Investment

By Simon Mori

This rare and increasingly popular gem is found only at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro. Although the knowledge of the stone, and the increasing popularity have been known for 30 years, there are some questions as to whether it is a wise investment gemstone. Tiffany and Company proclaimed it the "most important gemstone discovery in 2000 years." Still, skeptics wonder if all of the fuss is for naught and it is just another gem amongst many.

The popularity of Tanzanite has primarily been in the United States market, although there is a recent upsurge in interest in China and India. This recent new interest could add value to the claim that could be a good investment. In terms of sales, however, the US remains the primary market for Tanzanite. Even so, since the stone is so rare and so popular, it certainly would not appear to be what once could call a bad investment. It has continued to increase in value and popularity over the last 30 years, which is a good indication, if there is such a thing.

Both demand and supply apparently favor this gemstone to be a good investment. Being one of the several rarest gems, the fascination increases annually. Because the gem is located in merely one place, and has been continually mined since its discovery, supply may soon be running short.

Owning such kinds of gemstone, therefore, would put one into an excellent position. The significance would increase dramatically when the supply dwindled. Since demand is increasing dramatically, there are estimates that furthermore there can only be ten years or even less of mining available.

Investments of any type can be a risk. It will be relatively secure to express, however, that holding an uncommon gemstone like Tanzanite can be a better risk than putting money to the stock market. The gemstone will invariably possess some value, and ownership is safe. It won't seem unwise to state that as investments go, this gemstone can be a wise choice, particularly with interest growing in other locations. The actual strategic window is uncertain, however. The ten years is definitely an estimate, and when interest grows, same goes with mining, that will reduce the supply even faster. Purchasing Tanzanite might not become the worse financial financial commitment made. Investments take time and effort to calculate, but to this point, all indications are that it can be a wise investment overall.
