By Andrew Brentford

The job of home and office insulation and draught proofing to save money can be performed quite easily and for little expense. Safety is the key when doing any project at home. After gathering safety equipment gathering materials and tools will ensure a complete project is performed.

Ensuring that safety is always used when home improvements can not only make a job go smoother it can also keep from doing the job a second time. In the area of installing energy saving material a couple pieces of equipment are mandatory. First is eye protection as in eye glasses. This will protect the eyes from dust and debris that can be shook loose during the installation process.

The second is to wear a long sleeve shirt to keep material particles off of bare skin. If material particles get on the skin it will become itchy and irritated. The last item to get is a pair of gloves that will protect the bare skin. Once the safety equipment has been gathered it is time to move onto the tools.

The tools required for the energy saving material portion consist of a utility knife, a measuring tape, and staple gun with additional staples. The knife makes it easy to cut create the remove pieces for installation. The tape measure will ensure the proper size is cut the first time. The staple gun will be used to ensure the installation will is permanent.

When locating a draft that is coming into the area. There are a few different tools that can be used such as a lighter, candle, caulk and a caulking gun. For affected areas that include doorways there are repair kits available that attach to the door.

Performing the installation process requires the use of a measure tape to take measurements where the energy saving material will be installed. Once the measurements have been gathered using the box knife a piece can be cut from the roll of material. In order to install the material the staple gun is used. First take the material and push it gently into the opening; it will be held up from static electricity. The next step is to staple the material to the wall by adding a staple every six inches to ensure it is properly installed.

When properly draft proofing the first step is to use a candle or lighter to find where the draft is coming in from. After finding the drafts location, use the caulking gun and the caulk material to seal up the affected area. By squeezing the guns trigger apply the caulk to the drafts source.
