Tips For Vacation Travel Insurance

By Molly Hinges

A part of your vacation that is important but often overlooked is travel insurance. Travel insurance is what you need to consider whether you are traveling to a foreign country or to the next state.

There are several reasons why you should have insurance and these include covering medical expenses, life insurance for your family, or trip insurance when something goes wrong.

If you have medical coverage, what you could do to find out the specifics regarding your planned destination is to check with your insurer.

Medical coverage is something you can buy for the duration of your trip or for longer periods. In some travel insurance policies, multiple trips of specific duration are covered. Then there are some that will cover you for travel for up to a year.

Perhaps you are planning a skiing or mountain climbing vacation. What you may want to consider then is evacuation insurance. It is also quite possible that you will end up with a huge bill to pay for the service if ever you need to be rescued.

You may want to consider trip cancellation insurance if you are going on a cruise or taking an organized tour or just flying on an airplane. You or a family member may get sick at the last minute or your plans may change unexpectedly.

Refunds are not offered by many companies and you could be out thousands of dollars. There are many things that are beyond your control can mess with your plans.

Other popular coverage is loss of baggage, baggage delay, travel delay, dental, 24 Hour Traveler Assistance, and accidental death.

If you are driving out of the country, then checking with your auto insurer is what you should do. Purchase any extra coverage needed. An international roadside assistance policy is what you may want to ask about.

Auto breakdowns and accidents, no matter how bad they are at home, are compounded abroad.

Have you tried checking with your credit card company. Some coverage is what you may have if you purchase your vacation with their card.

If you are traveling with a group you may be able to get coverage cheaper as a group rather than individually.

Sometimes you will pay more for less coverage if you buy it through a travel agent who makes a nice commission. This is not always the case but it's your money. Try to shop around to get the best deal.
