Tips to help your small business with useful website content

Search the internet and you will soon find reference to significant changes in the Google search routine (Panda and Penguin) . While it is important and strongly recommended to build other channels for your website visitors like Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter, etc, you still can not just ignore Google. They still account for 80% of the search market So the question is, what's the most constructive use of a small business owners time to make their site appealing to Google.

What does Google want?

As mentioned many times, they'd like to provide the best user experience to the person doing a search by providing the most topical search results. So as to do this, Google wants excellent quality content.

What does this mean to a small enterprize?

Set some time aside and review the content on your site. Try and step back and think how somebody searching would want to use the site. Consider the following as you move from page to page. Make sure you capture your findings.

- does it offer value to the person looking?
- has it been written for the person looking or for the search engines?
- does the content answer important questions, provide information, etc?
- is the internet site simple to navigate, straightforward to find the information?
- can the information be improved and boosted?
- is the info out of date/defunct?
- ask friends and family for their input
- ask your clients (after all they know what they want)
- ask the people on your mailing list, followers on Facebook, Twitter, etc
- ask your web designer

There are several other questions that may be added. Nevertheless reviewing your site utilising the above will be a good start.

Take action - make changes

If you parts that may be improved, make changes. The earlier you make changes the faster they're going to be picked up by Google. Don't chill out and wait. If you have got a big website, start that changes in tranches, don't wait until you have reviewed all of your pages.
