The Various Parts of a Car Tyre

By Vincent To

There is no doubt that car tyres are vitally important as a component to helps the car to surge forward, when it makes contact with the road. If the car is not fitted with well-designed tyres, the effort spent in making up the engine and other parts would prove futile. Top-notch technology is required, to ensure that the car tyres are designed with superior know-how to fully utilize the engine power.

The moment of truth is clearly defined when one uses the phrase, where the rubber meets the road during any event, as it refers directly to the prominent role of tyres in making the car move forward efficiently on the road. You can get better mileage if the tyres are designed perfectly. As the mileage is boosted, the cost saving of fuel is tremendous.

Apart from boosting efficiency and cutting fuel costs, the car tyre also plays a crucial role in the safety of a vehicle. Modern car tyres are designed for better grip on the road surface even during sharp turns. The tread patterns on the outer most surface of the tyres are designed to achieve maximum grip so that the car does not skid off the road on tight bends. Road grip is also important when the driver applies the brakes to bring the car to an immediate halt. A tyre with better grip characteristics would bring the vehicle to a halt sooner. So from a safety point of view, the car tyre has a very important role to play and is therefore a very important component in the car.

Every car tyre is made up of an array of different components which provide stability and strength to the wheels. High strength steel cables known as Beads are employed in the inner rim of the tyre in order to grip the rim of the wheel securely without slipping. The inner as well as the outer edges of the tyre that meet the rim are lined with these Beads for better grip over the rim. The body ply is the fabric that spans between the inner and the outer Beads and makes direct contact with the inflatable tube inside the tyre. The ply fabric has a rubber coating for better adhesion with the other components of the tyre. The strength of the tyre is also measured by the number of plies used in the tyre. Most car tyres have two plies, while some might have a few more. The tyre can be strengthened further and made puncture proof by adding steel-belts under the tyre tread. These are known as steel belted radials which provide better contact with the surface of the road.

It is truly amazing what modern advanced technologies can do to make car tyres fit into the present scheme of things. We just have to wait for future developments to know how this important component will change with newer cars.
