Calculating Car Transport Cost

By Tracy Hudson

Maybe you're curious about the true expense of shipping an automobile. Perhaps you'll try using the Web or soliciting tentative assessments so you can figure out if it's a good idea to get rid of your ride and purchase another, or to enlist a Car Transport service and get to your destination by air or rail. But there is no quick reply to the question of what it could run you.

For what reason? Because there are some factors that affect the final price. If you wish to grasp how auto shipping companies set their service charges, you'll have to grasp the relevant math and the various considerations which may result in significantly different charges for the same service.

Multiply the remoteness of where you're going from your starting point by how much room your machine takes up and add the broker fee to find the minimum financial outlay required for you to have your machine moved via open transport. The rate will be determined by a 'cost per mile' method, with cost per mile being delimited by the transport enterprise. Contingent on the firm's approach, you might be charged 40 cents a mile to transport a small automobile, e.g. a sedan or hatchback.

Therefore, look at a map to learn how far in miles it is from your origin to your destination. You can now estimate what you will be charged to ship your machine by multiplying the total number of miles by what you would be charged to ship a machine of similar dimensions. These are still only basic guidelines, and there are other considerations which may drive the fee up or down.

Auto shipping businesses are highly dependent on fuel costs, If the price goes up, all transport costs go up as well. However, depending on the quality and size of the company, the fluctuation in the shipping rates will vary from one company to another.

The route, pick up and drop off locations also affect the cost of car transport. Major routes, e.g. Los Angeles to Miami, are commonly used, so it is not hard to find drivers to ship the automobile, and with a greater number of drivers, prices will be better. In contrast, if you live somewhere remote from the better-traveled routes (e.g. Barre, Vermont or Casper, Wyoming) or you don't live in proximity to a freight terminal, getting your conveyance hauled to your destination will put you to greater expense because drivers are harder to find.

When in the year you choose to ship your car results in changes in car shipping costs as well. During winter, people tend to stay at home, driving price quotes down. In summertime, conditions are conducive to motoring and many choose this season to change their residence, which can trigger a rise in shipping charges due to demand exceeding supply.

Vehicles have different proportions depending on their make and model, and this is among the most important considerations on two accounts. One is the weight as heavy load causes the truck to burn more fuel. The other is the proportions, with an SUV taking up as much room as two small sedans.

Transport will cost more for those who decline to permit the shipping service to set their own collection and delivery dates. You can expect to be charged more for expedited vehicle transport because of its rushed nature. Drop-off date and time has to be flexible due to the wide range of impediments to the completion of the trip that may be encountered, like weigh stations, weather, and traffic, so don't be surprised if your automobile doesn't show up for several days.

Certain special problems may arise which may influence auto shipping costs. For instance, the car may have been customized in such a way that it needs to be specially dealt with, or may be unusable and have to be towed. Learn these things and you will learn why there can be such wide disparities in auto shipping charges.
