One of the Top Investments Any Small Business Can Make

By David Ferrers

When you run a SOHO business cash is always tight. You have got to be cautious about how you spend available cash. Nevertheless you still need to invest in the expansion of your business and in your own personal growth as a business person.

After nearly a quarter of a century of running my private small business I feel that I'm in a position of having the ability to offer some handy advice. Keep in mind that I have managed to not just survive but to flourish.

I've owned two businesses over the last 25 years. The first was a promotional consultancy and the second is still a business coaching company.

One of my very first impressions of starting and running my very own business was that it could be a lonely way to use your time if you don't get out and about and build a net of contacts. I use my love of sports to keep me in communication with people. Always playing a lot of sport and using it as a vehicle for making friendships. It seemed like a natural thing for me to do.

At no stage have I ever invested significantly in training courses. When I need something, like somebody to do my tax return, I hire a pro. But I did invest in NLP training to discover the best way to use NLP techniques to help me network, to deal with some of my anxieties and to empower me to sell more effectively.

What I discovered is it's our abilities to get on with every kind of other people and to influence people that are the most necessary skills of keeping a SOHO business prosperous. Inter-personal skills count for more than anything you can learn on a high-powered marketing course, or a business process course, or a computer training course. All these talents are valuable but you have a tendency to pick them up as you go along. And if you have a good network of contacts there are always people you can ask when you have to know ways to do something. However how to manage yourself, that's the most significant skill of all.
