Various Scams And How To Avoid Them

By Michael Raja

There are tons of scams out there, and there are other ones being invented every day. So how do you protect yourself from online scams? Here are one or two tips on how to identify them and so avoid them with no need to be an IT support expert.

Check the web address

There will be fraudsters out there who will try and pretend to be widely known sites, PayPal being a good example. What they are going to do is send out emails stating that you have got some cash left in your account and you'll need to claim it. You will be then asked to click a link within the e-mail, which should have an address that looks quite similar, like www.paypal-secure.com or www.pay-pal.net which may look very like the genuine PayPal site. You will be required to log in, which is how they get your login details.

The same con is also implemented for bank login details. The criminals will then have access to your money details. So you'll need to make certain the web address is true. If ever in doubt, ignore it. Folk like your bank and other fiscal institutions can always call you if it is an emergency.

Too many pop ups

Fake websites will always have plenty of pop ups. It's an instant red flag. If you've a message just for logging in, and another for navigating to another page inside a web page, it most likely isn't real. A lot of online retail shops have emerged. To keep your cash and your personal details safe, stick to the credible ones.

A really great offer

Let's imagine you're aiming to buy an Apple Macbook Pro. The price on Apple's website is ?1,300. You find a web retailer selling the exact same machine for ?699.00, nearly half the cost. You would not even be able to purchase a redecorated model for that great a real deal. If the offer is too good to be true, it very likely is. Walk away realizing that you have saved yourself a lot of cash and heartache.
