Different Types of Credit Cards

By Emily Thomas

A lot of times when people are looking to build up their credit score, or repair their credit, they may think about getting a credit card. There are several types of cards out there and they can have different effects on your credit score. Knowing what types of cards are available to you can help you make the best choice on what card you want to help improve your score.

If you are already short on cash you will need to take drastic measures to ensure you can pay all of your debts in order to improve your credit score. If you don't know what to do, it wouldn't hurt to swallow your pride and ask for help as there are financial advisers that are willing to help you go through this time.

If you are not in a bad financial standing then it may be possible to make arrangements with your creditors to pay off those old bills. Just make sure you stick to the bargain because if you fail to do so, don't expect them to be so generous the next time this happens.

Another type of card is one that gives you rewards. The concept is the same as with a standard card, but you can receive something back when you use your card. Some airlines issue out credit cards with an offer to earn extra miles by spending a certain amount, or perks while at the airport or on board.

Some companies will offer you cash back rewards meaning for however much you spend you can get a percentage of that money back. Companies that offer this type of reward may allow you to use the money you get back to help pay for part of your balance at the end of the month, or for other services that they offer. Most cards that offer cash back rewards give you an option to earn points which you can then use for deals on hotel stays, retail specials, trips, and even gas.

You do that by knowing your current credit score and then reviewing it. You may discover mistakes on your report and if you do try and get them corrected. The best way to get those mistakes corrected is to call the credit agency and give them any supporting paperwork. Never send the original copies because if they lose it, you have nothing left to support your claims so send photocopies.

There are other types of cards that are available, even for people with bad credit, or no credit. When looking at what type of card you want, read all of the details. Try to stay away from cards with high interest rates, or monthly/annual fees. Don't pick blindly when deciding which credit card and which company to go with; do your research, or ask someone you trust your finances with what card would be the best option for you and your credit score or spending habits.
